Sisterlocks at 20 months!

10 10 2008

Wow! I can’t believe I’ve had my Sisterlocks for 20 months now. Look at the difference a year has made.

Wowsers!!

It will be 2 years before I know it. I definitely see some growth and maturing, although I’d hoped to see more. I’m remaining patient. My hair is so much thicker now and it’s been over 10 years since I’ve had this much hair…maybe even 15 years. I’m still retightening my own hair, but I’m gonna get a professional to handle it in December. I think I’m gonna try Oyin’s Greg Juice. Meika gave it a rave review and I was very satisfied with the products i ordered from them years ago. That Funk Butter was the business!!
Once I hit the 2 year mark, I’m using my own shampoo. Well maybe I should say I’ll use my own in combination with the SL shampoo. I don’t really have a problem with the product; I just want something different in my head.

Now for the pics…

I should get some of Brunsli’s hair ties now. I love my Soft Spikes too. I’m learning how to get more curl versus just a bend using the Spikes. I’ve started flat-twisting and wearing little ponytails. I’m trying to be more versatile with all this hair! My daily “style” is just pulling it away from my face and securing both sides with 2 bobby pins. That’s fancy. lol I’m just so happy with my hair. ūüôā

A little bounce in my step (Sisterlocks)

30 04 2008

My friend finally contacted me. It was brief, but he’s promised that we will talk more later. Whew.

So guess who experimented with rollers today? ME! I was bored and I had found some of my mom’s super old school, plastic rollers and I went for it. I was looking very Big Worm-ish (a la Friday). Remember him?

This is how my hair usually looks. It just kinda falls where it may. I think this was right before I went to see ‘big’.

Sisterlocks update!

29 04 2008

I was trying to get in touch with my Sisterlock consultant for weeks with no luck.¬† I called and left messages and got no return call.¬† Normally my lady’s good at answering or calling right back.¬† So I knew it was time (probably past time) for me to get my do done so I asked my homegirl who she goes to now (she recently changed consultants for different reasons – her old consultant was SLOW as molasses!¬† I mean, she’d sometimes have to get her retightenings done on 2 days!!¬† Can you imagine?).¬† She gave me Miss Alva Clemmons’ name and I called and took her first available appointment.

She was very friendly.¬† She has an entire shop set up in an added room in her home.¬† It’s quite nice too!¬† Tiled floors, nice chairs, big tv, beautiful artwork and the walls are painted the most beautiful shades of color.¬† She makes a good first impression!¬† I sat down and she got started.¬† Something I immediately¬† noticed was that I barely felt her working in my head.¬† Like, I knew that she was working, but my head wasn’t hurting.¬† Let me explain…
Whenever I got my hair retightened before, my I would flinch as every loc was worked on because it hurt.¬† I thought it was because I was tender-headed.¬† I’d been told that before and my SL consultant told me that as well.¬† I was used to getting my hair done and waiting 2 or 3 days before I could wash or style because my head would be so tender and sore.¬† I figured this was part of the process.¬† So having Alva work in my head with no discomfort made me think something was wrong.¬† When she snuck away to answer a phone call, I looked in the mirror at the progress and was shocked!¬† It was tight but not too tight.¬† When she returned, I told her that I wasn’t accustomed to not being in pain.¬† She told me that it was being done too tight and it wasn’t good, especially for the areas of my hair that are thin.¬† I don’t think I’ll be going back to my old consultant.¬† She’s great, don’t get me wrong.¬† But I think she’s better for folks with matured locs and not-so-tender¬† scalps.

So…I like her a lot!¬† Already made my next 6 week appointment.¬† I felt that she was more sensitive to the current state of my hair and where it could go.¬† Plus she made herself available to me and called to confirm the appointment twice.

I also noticed that, despite what I previously thought, my locs are maturing pretty well!  I gotta get my camera batteries in order so I can post some pics ASAP.

Sisterlocked at _ _ months?

11 04 2008

I had these plans to celebrate being locked for 1 year. That was in February. I didn’t even take pictures! Sometimes I don’t like my hair. Sometimes I love it. I think I don’t like the scalp issues I have but they’ve been around for 10 years now. I want to count to see exactly how many locs I have, but…yeah, I stop at about 30 each time.

I’m going to order some Soft Spikes today and I’m taking the retightening class next month with Calla. Maybe having more control over my hair will give me more satisfaction. I dunno. But I’m not feeling it today. I have so much slippage and breakage that I feel it’s not progressing as it should, but when I read some of Brunsli’s archives, I saw that I’m in about the same stage she was in around this time. I need to be more patient, I know. I know.

I managed to dig up a few pics in picasa to show some of my hair’s recent journey. It also shows my love for college paraphernalia.

Soul-glo!

28 11 2007

Apparently, this is how my hair falls naturally when it’s overdue for a retightening. It’s not a good look.

That middle picture is all kinds of rough.
I keep wanting to sing that soul-glo song from “Coming to America”. Just let yo’ SOOOOOOOOULLL GLOO! Reminds me of my mom’s old jheri curl too. But it won’t stay out of my face. And i have 4 more weeks until I can get it done.

The tail

23 11 2007

Apparently I’m so fashion-forward, I brought the tail back in style and didn’t even know it!

Do you see that? That little sucker will not go away either. Hard-headed.

There they go

I’ve had a few locs exhibit this problem:
